I had the right idea, I was doing spirals then clearing the rest with vertical lines. Nice Job.

i used to do the same thing in mr.do! (a game like dig dug)

I just got the achievment. You have to dig through the ENTIRE area on any round. Even the areas that monsters have already dug through AND the area above ground.
