  • The cub was in 2 pieces. The main battery room suffered a catastrophe which caused an explosion, this the K129 sank. As many of the crew that could ran to the forward and aft torpedo room in an attempt to seal off the water tight bulkhead and with any luck, survive, and perhaps float in it to the surface. That didn't work out so well for them, but it was the best and only option that they had.

The USA knew where it sank, the USSR didn't, so they went and got what they could.

  • Holy crap at some of the BS people are spewing out about what they "think they know" about this sub and it's history, wow.....

  • @Auggie. You are incorrect. Under international law, military vessels continue to belong to their country of origin unless that country expressly abandons it. Therefore, they do not fall under maritime salvage laws. So, when the CIA lifted the sub they were basically violating international law.

  • @Auggie56 The United States managed to get people on that sub before it embarked on it's mission in the North Pacific. They seized control, and turned the vessel South for Pearl, and USS Sword Fish came alongside to escort. About halfway there, something really terrible occurred.

  • @55t1 Rules of the sea, if it's abandon for so long (48 hours ?) it's anyone's property who retrieves it. So no, it's not theft.

  • @AbuPaul the submarine was a deisel powered submarine, diesel submarines DO NOT run deep under the surface with the diesels...they use battery power...only through the use of a device called a snorkel can the sub run the diesels while underwater, and then only while just under the surface. This soviet submarine was a rogue sub and sunk while trying to fire one of its nuclear missiles at pearl harbor hawaii

  • @canyonrunner953 This has been discredited.

  • K-129 was Was sunk will attempting an UNAUTHORIZED Nuclear release in an attempt to start a war betwenne the USSRs 2 main enemies the US and the PRC the sub was mimicing a chinese Golf 1 sub and was attemptin a launch on Pearl harbour. Explain if you can why there was the remains of a soviet sailor foud some distance from the wreck dressed in foul weather gear and that only the remains of 9 crew were found in the control center and the rest of the crew was found in the torpedo room.

  • uhnter1 is correct. The sub sank due to accumulation of gases leading to an explosion. It was diesel powered and it didn't surface on time to release the exhaust.

  • I don't see how stealing a submarine could start a war... even if there are tensions between countries
