This most beautiful of American Ducks was introduced into Southern California. It was in the past a rare migratory visitor but is now established at Lake Cuyamaca and the Santee Lakes. Placing nesting boxes in trees near ponds has resulted in breeding populations.

if it was a rare migrant I would bet that at one time it was established in the area, but due to habitat destruction (possibly centuries ago) it had been extirpated from the area.
I could be wrong.
