Robert A. Heinlein's "The Brass Cannon." Grandmaster science-fiction author, Robert A. Heinlein, originally titled his Hugo-winning novel, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, "The Brass Cannon," after a Revolutionary-War-style cannon that he fired off each July 4th. In this video you can see this cannon fired at the Angeles Shooting Range and learn its history from science-fiction writers Brad Linaweaver, J. Kent Hastings, and J. Neil Schulman, and its restorer, Randy Herrst. Narrated by Brad Linaweaver, who received the cannon as a bequest from Virginia Heinlein.

So was the cannon firing anything other than a blank charge?

Yes. There was wadding to hold the charge in.

Very timely during the Heinlein centennial year. Great info about The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress.

I read about this restoration on Wikipedia, and I immediate searched out this video. TMIAHM is incredible...one of a few books that actually made me cry at the end.

He will be sorely missed. He was a gift to us all.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is one of my all time favorite novels, along with Glory Road.

    Hi jt

I was the one who rebuilt the cannon and set it up for firing. Powder = black powder FFg grade. The only projectile was a ball of paper wadding, because this is a "salute cannon" and the 1" bore is not final-finished. Such roughness when combined with a solid projectile would cause high risk of pressure spikes that could blow up the cannon.

A blown up cannon would not have pleased either the history fans, nor the people who were using the cannon on the range! :-D
