Assessing the value of our natural wealth: how do we make good decisions for the future?
Synopsis: Placing an economic value on our natural wealth is something that is becoming increasing important on a global scale. However conducting economic valuations of ecosystems and their related goods and services can be a difficult task. It is much more than using conventional economic decision-making tooks. The process must also include significant consideration for the value we place on nature and how we can account for the longer term sustainability of new developments. Dr Anna Straton explored these issues using examples taken from her current reseach aimed at estimating the economic value of Australia's tropical rivers. Dr Stratton's work for the CSIRO in northern parts of Australia included field work in the Daly River and Mitchell River regions.
