A steady supply of fresh fruits and vegetables is helping a lame moose and her calf layer on the fat this winter.

Acreage owners Mike and Christine Haustein say that, at this time of year, its pretty normal to see moose around their home in the Shady Nook district, about 20 minutes northwest of Penhold.

The Hausteins had made a habit of pulling the apples off their trees in fall and feeding them to visiting moose, who would move on after the apples had all gone.
