We are a constitutional republic governed by a democratically-elected representative body. On a state level, measures are sometimes decided by direct democratic method, which is unfortunately counter to the intentions of our founding fathers.

If you were familiar with the arguments of our founding fathers, you would NOT be pro-democracy, nor would you support any measure that seeks to infringe upon the personal freedoms of a minority group.

  • The USA is not a democracy in the strictest or the original sense of the word. However, as the word is commonly used today, any nation that selects its leaders through open elections is considered "democratic".

  • There is no bigger sacred cow than democracy. Contemporary commentators equate freedom with democracy while modern America gets less free every day because of it.

I'm glad I came across Mencken in high school. Otherwise I don't know I'd stand on the issue today.

  • Gay activists like to pretend they're so concerned with the "proper" mechanics of government. In truth they champion whatever works, whether it's direct vote, friendly legislators or activist judges. Gays aren't opposed to any method, extra-judicial, or otherwise so long as they obtain the results they desire. They'll pander to voters, legislators and the courts so long as it serves their ends. And cry foul when the method fails.

  • Emi: I wonder if you'd be singing this ditty if Prop 8 was defeated by voters 70% to 30%? I think not. The biggest distinction between a democracy and a republic is the presence of a constitution. In California, we have a constitutionally protected direct vote so when gutless public officials like Jerry Brown fail to support the will of the voting electorate, (his sole duty as atty general) and in fact goes against the will of the people, the will of the voters still prevails.

  • its not a republic... its a democratic republic

like the peoples republic of china

or the democratic republic of vietnam (north communist vietnam)

  • The supreme court has ruled that the 50 states are countries with respect to each other but under the 14th amendment system you are participating in rebellion against your de jure country when you vote, through contract as well and that is why you have to pay IRS and so forth.. and are responsible for the national debt. watch all 6 vids for more info please watch?v=G1B33IvnJ4M&feature=channel_page

  • I LOVE THIS CHICK!!

  • Excellent point. That is why a Republic is better than a Democracy , usually.

However , the state of California became a Democracy when it established the proposition system and allowed people to change the Constitution with just 50% of the vote.

Now all this state needs is to have daily elections for every legislation there is.

Then its a true Democracy , and then California is fucked.
