  • so the checkride is like a final test for your PPL? Im really interested in becoming a pilot and making it a career, it isn't that tough is it? I would just have to know how to read all the dials and everything in the dash...?? Is there a lot of math involved, if so what kind?

  • @ascitiesburn2001 It can be challenging at times but nothing you probably could not handle. A lot is just muscle memory and doing things over and over. With the PPL everything is so new so the learning curve is there and you have to get through that. As far as math goes...not advanced math. If you want to see most of the PPL process I documented most of it on my iTunes podcast. Just search Student Pilot Journal in iTunes and download them or go to beapilot.com.

  • im just wondering and im not trying to be mean, because i know nothing about flying, but did he forget to take off the brakes in the beginning?

  • @ascitiesburn2001 This is me in the video. Had I not released the brakes you would have seen that. I did forget to "hold" the brakes for the short field takeoff and you will hear my instructor correct me. If you look at the title this is prep for the checkride which was 2 months later. We skipped around in the training and worked on short/soft field towards the end of training. We did about 13 hours of prep. Most private pilots can agree that PPL is jam packed. It is a license to learn.

  • Really cool for you to post this for those of us at the same stage! I hope my DPE is laid back! I always forget something here and there...but my CFI always tries to drill it into me. Sht & Soft Field are the last things he wants me to finish perfecting, then time for a mock ride with another CFI.

Any advice for those at this progress point? I'm sweatin' my upcoming checkride!

For me...I'm worried about consistency... some days I'm spot on, others...well you know.

  • Like they say...just fly the plane. Easy for me to say now that I am past the checkride. I was nervous too, but I ended up flying better than I have ever flown. Get a lot of sleep if you can. :-)

  • You can purchase the audio cable from Aircraft Spruce's website. Just search "cockpit recorder" and it will find it. I am sure there are others but this is what I used. For these flights I plugged the 1/8th inch cable into my video camera mic input which makes it much easier for editing than if I record into a pocket recorder...which of course will work as well, you just have to sync the audio and video. If you visit the link you will see a diagram of how the headset plugs into the cable. -SPJ

  • I just want to know how you recorded the audio.

    What's your setup ?

  • btw, who's using the GSM phone? :P

  • I know what you mean with those crosswinds from the right. Super fun coming in for the landing, but it really takes all focus. :) Good stuff!

  • @zeromoterhead I did stalls on my first flight.

  • thank god for the mute button !

  • i was nervous for my check ride but the instructor was very nice he corrected my mistake the only one i did was forgetting to raise flaps after t/o but i still managed to pass

  • I think your video could be a life-lesson for aspiring pilots.

Every check-ride you will ever have will be like this. From your Private/Instrument/Commercial/Multi/Instructor/ATP.

EVERY check-ride you will have throughout your life will involve the same thing. A guy that's trying to TEACH you something. They are TEACHERS after-all, and theyTHRIVE on teaching you something new.

Act interested. As if you'd never heard of the concept before. You'll pass every time if you appear interested.

  • nice video loved it!!! how to become a pilot, what subjects to take????and marks??? because i wnt to become a pilot

  • A great instructional video. When any of my friends ask what is it like to learn to fly, I think I will show them this video.
