UMP wasn't much of an improvement. Actually, is less advanced than the mp5: huge bolt for simple blowback action like a ww2 smg, while the mp5 had a lightweight roller delayed bolt. 45 cal is to attract american buyers, but while is a great pistol caliber there are other pistol calibers more suited to carbines (like the 40 sw or very hot 9mms ) .

The only really new thing that came out relating to smgs is the Kriss. Now that is an advancement.

That wasn't a G36, but the variant G36K (G36 is longer). And re: sl8, though a variant as well, its also NOT the g36 (in the true sense), it has a thumbhole grip as opposed to the pistol grip of the G36, and does NOT have a folding stock in either sl8 or the military version sl9. And the folding stock is not only 'skeletonized' for weight reduction, but to allow the ejection of casings when fired in the folded position. A full butt stock would cover the ejection port.
