From the Doobie Brothers' album, "The Captain and Me".

Lyrics:
Up all night I could not sleep,
the whiskey that I drank was cheap,
with shakin' hands
I went and I lit up my last cigarette.
Well, the sun came, night had fled,
and sleepy-eyed I reached my bed,
I saw you sleepy dreamin'
there all covered and warm.

South city midnight lady, I'm much obliged indeed,
you sure have saved this man
whose soul was in need.
I thought there was no reason
for all these things I do,
but the smile that I sent out returned with you.

When day has left the night behind,
and shadows roll across my mind,
I sometimes find myself alone out walking the street.
Yes and when I'm feelin' down and blue,
then all I do is think of you,
and all my foolish problems seem to fade away

South city midnight lady, I'm much obliged indeed,
you sure have saved this man
whose soul was in need.
I thought there was no reason
for all these things I do,
but the smile that I sent out returned with you.

South city midnight lady, I'm much obliged indeed,
you sure have saved this man
whose soul was in need.
I thought there was no reason
for all these things I do,
hey, but the smile that I sent out
returned with you.

Throughout history there have been times, very short periods of time; usually only a generation, when a critical mass is reached: the Golden Age of Greece, the height of the Roman Republic, the Enlightenment in Europe, the founding of the United States and the music of the mid-60's to mid-70's. This last was truely a magical time of the most wonderous soul inspiring music, and I feel blessed to have been young and experienced it first hand in its fullness and glory.

I had the good fortune of growing up during this time as well. I know exactly what you mean when you refer to it as a "special time in music". I've thought about it. I believe it was so special because Rock, as we know it today, was so very new at that time. From the mid 60's through the 70's, it grew by leaps and bounds. The quantity of quality talent in such a short time was incredible. They had no mold to create from. They made the molds. And we watched it's creation before our very eyes.

Oh man.. OH MAN.. i hear this and I am 7 years old all over again. The Capt and Me. 1973. Was the world way more simple then or was it just our imaginations? This song just encapsulates that easy breezy 70's style when it was ALL about melody and vibe. So good. SO good!!!. One of my all time fav doobie songs.

I'll always think of Connie when I hear this song.I loved her from the time we were in high school to the day she disappeared 12 years later.
