Tour 05 DesCours PODCAST for "Saccade-based Display" by Hideyuki Ando, Tetsutoshi Tabata, Junji Watanabe, part of DesCours 2009 Installation series sponsored by the New Orleans Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
Concept:
In daily life humans move their eyes naturally and unconsciously to get visual information, though the eye movements are hardly noticed. The Saccade-based Display uses the eye movements to present visual images. When light sources (LEDs) are fixed on a vertical line, and the flashing pattern is changed quickly during a horizontal saccade eye movement, a two-dimensional image can be perceived due to the afterimage expanded on the retina. The Saccade-based Display can show two-dimensional visual images of a ghostly nature in midair, without any projection screen, only by using a single line of light source. In addition, recent technological progress enables us to show even life-size photographic images such as humans and landscapes. The enhancement of the image quality of the Saccade-based Display provides a new perspective on design and aesthetic production.
Bio:
HIDEYUKI ANDO completed his master's course at the Graduate School of Engineering, Aichi Institute of Technology, in 1999. In 2000 he worked as a junior research assistant at RIKEN's Bio Mimetic Control research center. In 2001 he worked as a researcher at The University of Tokyo Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies as a member of the former Japan Science Technology Corporation's 'harmony and control' project. From 2002 he was a research associate, and from 2007 a research specialist, at NTT Communication Science Laboratories. He is currently an associate professor at the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, Osaka University, and is a doctor of Information Science and Technology. He devotes his research to the study of sensory, sentient and mobile interfaces, and virtual reality.

TETSUTOSHI TABATA is a visual installation artist who studied the Japanese dance-theatre butoh with Yoshito Ohno and Akiko Motofuji from 1992-1996 and became deeply involved with dance performance and projected scenography. In 1994 he co-founded 66b/cell, a collective using real time and pre-recorded computer graphics and animation to create different textures, lighting and kinetic effects. Performances and presentations include Ars Electronica 2002, The Japan Virtual Reality Society, the Seoul International Dance Festival, the Adelaide Festival, the Brisbane Festival, as well as performances and installations in NYC, Europe and Asia. Currently, Tetsutoshi is an invited researcher at Rikkyo Amusement Research Center (Rikkyo University) where he is investigating sound and visual environments for performance.

MARIA ADRIANA VERDAASDONK based herself in Tokyo in the early 1990s to study the Japanese martial art aikido and dance-theatre butoh. In 1994 she co-founded 66b/cell as a result of work combining body movement and multimedia. Collaborative investigation involves digital technologies to explore new possibilities for the multi-layering of visual and sonic textures where the dancer/performer potentially shapes and is shaped by these media. In 2007 she completed a practice-led PhD at Queensland University of Technology investigating interdependencies between performing bodies, visual and sonic media through the notion of poetic felt space. Performances include Ars Electronica 2002, ISEA2002, The Japan Virtual Reality Society, 2003 Seoul International Dance Festival and 2008 World Dance Alliance Global Summit. She received an RSA Encouragement of Arts Award for visual research on the Japanese art concept of ma in 1996 and the Peter Elkin Drama Prize for Faust II Project in 1997.

JUNJI WATANABE graduated from Department of Mathematical Engineering and Information Physics, School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo in 2000, and received his Ph.D. in Information Science and Technology from the University of Tokyo in 2005. He studies cognitive science, and its applications to communication devices and artistic expressions. His research has been performed not only from an academic viewpoint but also through creative activities in collaboration with artists and designers.
