Siren ambiance of a tornado warning on April 30, 2010. Sirens heard include:
Whelen 3016 x 2
Whelen 4004 x 1
Whelen 4003 x 1
Whelen 2000/400R x 1
Federal Signal Thunderbolt 1000T x 1
??? Federal Signal XT22 ???
Unfortunately, these last few activations may be the last for St. Louis County's mechanical sirens. The system used to be made up of mostly 3016's, 1000T's, and 2T22's, but in '05 (?) the system was updated to include about 100 new Whelen 4000 series and 2000 series. As said, never once have I seen a Whelen in this area fail to activate.

  • Also something to keep in mind for those who do not live here: St Louis county will activate the entire siren array as soon as a warning is issued, NOT just when a storm is imminent, the idea being to get you into vigilance/response mode instead of omg-it's-right-there-let's-panic mode.

I for one am grateful for this policy: many times I've been ignorant of the weather, then the sirens prompt to me take action.

It's an interesting ambiance in that SOMETHING is happening.

  • I used to live a block from Ronnie's Plaza about a year ago. Not sure if you know what kind of siren is installed next to the theater, but that sucker is LOUD!

I live in Normandy now, up in North St Louis County and had a crazy experience during the tornado that near-missed us Friday, April 22nd.......heard the sirens activate, then during the roar of the storm I heard the siren to the north in the Ferguson/Florissant area just STOP mid-wail....scary to know a tornado just destroyed it

  • not laughing at you though.

  • @VMFA115Starloric lol its kinda funny. well your kinda funny because the tornado sirens are meant to get people to shelter but your outside listening to them. lol. it seems scary.

  • @VMFA115Starloric lol......... ya i guess id have to get used to it
