Lyrics:

In the merry month of June, From me' home I started,
Left the girls of Tuam, So sad and broken hearted,
Saluted father dear, Kissed me' darlin' mother,
Drank a pint of beer, Me' grief and tears to smother,
Then off to reap the corn, Leave where I was born,
Cut a stout blackthorn, To banish ghost and goblin,
Bought a pair of brogues, Rattled o'er the bogs,
Frightened all the dogs,On the rocky road to Dublin.

One, two, three, four five,
Hunt the hare and turn her
Down the rocky road
And all the ways to Dublin,
Whack-fol-lol-de-ra.

While in Mullingar that night, I rested limbs so weary,
Started by me' lake, Me' spirit is bright and cheery
Took a drop of the pure, To keep me' heart from sinkin',
That's the Paddy's cure, When ever he's on for drinking.
To see the lassies smile, Laughing all the while,
At me' curious style, 'Twould set your heart a-bubblin'.
Asked if I was hired, Wages I required,
Till I was almost tired, Of the rocky road to Dublin.

One, two, three, four five,
Hunt the hare and turn her
Down the rocky road
And all the ways to Dublin,
Whack-fol-lol-de-ra.

[Interlude]

Well, in Dublin next arrived, I thought it be a pity,
To be so soon deprived, A view of that fine city.
So then I took a stroll, Down among the quality,
Bundle it was stole, And in a neat locality;
Something crossed me' mind, Then I looked behind;
No bundle could I find, Upon me' stick a wobblin'.
Enquirin' for the rogue, Said me' Connacht brogue,
Wasn't much in vogue, On the rocky road to Dublin.

One, two, three, four five,
Hunt the hare and turn her
Down the rocky road
And all the ways to Dublin,
Whack-fol-lol-de-ra.

While, From there I got away, Me' spirits never failin'
Landed on the quay, Just as the ship was sailin';
Captain at me roared, Said that no room had he,
Then I jumped aboard, A cabin found for Paddy,
Then down among the pigs, Played some hardy rigs,
Danced some hearty jigs, The water round me bubblin',
When off Holyhead, Wished me' self was dead,
Or better farther instead, On the rocky road to Dublin.

One, two, three, four five,
Hunt the hare and turn her
Down the rocky road
And all the ways to Dublin,
Whack-fol-lol-de-ra.

The boys of Liverpool, When we safely landed,
Called me' self a fool; I could no longer stand it;
Blood began to boil, Temper I was losin',
Poor ould Erin's isle They began abusin',
"Hurrah my soul," sez I, Shillelagh I let fly;
Galway boys were by, Saw I was a hobble in,
With a loud hurray, Joined in the affray.
Quickly cleared the way, For the rocky road to Dublin.

One, two, three, four five,
Hunt the hare and turn her
Down the rocky road
And all the ways to Dublin,
Whack-fol-lol-de-ra.

  • Some of your lyrics are still wrong...

    Verse 2: Started by DAYLIGHT, me SPIRITS bright and CHEERY

    Verse 5: Galway boys were NIGH

    Thanks for all the work, though! I love this arrangement.

  • Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the lyrics. I can definately hear them pronounce a B on the latter one, and while I know most other version of this song use 'daylight', being the Irish Descendants and all; I can't be too sure. I'll look into it some more I guess.

  • @Rheostatik The lyrics he's using are from the Dropkick's version.

    And it's not "Galway boys were Nigh" it's definitely "Some Galway boys were by" - It sounds like that and it fits with the song - He got in a fight, some lads from Galway were there, they joined in.

  • I love This song

  • @clinehan250 hey man, im straight from the soggy boggy banks of torbay!

  • @Notasthinkasudrunkim But that's the beauty of old folk tunes. They change. There are no rules! :D *love this version*

  • Its an old traditional folk song people. the lyrics aren't always the same because its been learned so many ways

  • This mustn't register on an emotional level. First, distract target. Then block his blind jab. Counter with cross to left cheek. Discombobulate. Dazed, he will attempted a wild haymaker. Employ elbow block and body shot. Block ferro left. Weaken right jaw. Now fracture. Break cracked ribs. Traumatize solar plexus. Dislocate jaw entirely. Heel kick to diaphragm. In summary- ears ringing, jaw fractured, 3 ribs cracked 4 broken, diaphragm hemorrhaging. couldn't resist....

  • Beginers version of the Sherlock Holmes version. If you can sing this version it makes that one seem easier.

  • What ive noticed with irish music, is that some same songs are sung by different groups. foggy dew, rocky road to dublin, danny boy, etc. Still love irish music. favorite Genre!!
