  • @wnesbitt1 You and 8080256256 make valid points....in fact, Betty Freidan wrote in THE FEMININE MYSTIQUE about professional women dressing much frillier--dresses, fancy hats, gloves--than many housewives at the time, because the assumption was that being intelligent, competent people doing anything outside the home meant they were less than "womanly".
