On 21. October 2011, a Soyuz rocket lifted off on its maiden flight from Europe's space base in South America, carrying the first 2 satellites in the Galileo satellite geopositioning system.
The launch -- the first by the veteran rocket beyond Russia's historic bases at Plesetsk and Baikonur -- is part of a commercial deal struck in 2003 to extend the range of Arianespace, which markets services from the European Space Agency (ESA) base in Kourou

This is incredible, the same russian rocket that liftet Gagarin 50 years ago is still in use and we have not built anything much better then that.

Not exactly the same rocket, as the rocket has undergone several upgrades (current version Soyuz-ST) but yes, it's the same basic design
