@starryeyedrealist -- I think we have it nailed down. Putting it all together: It's real, and it is indeed Danny's dad, who did play for the Bears in the early '50's and who was (also) called Whizzer. Whenever I'd seen the play, I assumed it was BYRON White, the famous Whizzer. Considering all that we've said, plus how Danny talked about the play, I'm convinced it's what is said on this video: it's his dad. It just isn't the FAMOUS Whizzer White. (How does that work for you?)

@starryeyedrealist -- No, I think we can be pretty sure it's for real. It's a famous play and I saw it a few times on TV back in the day. The problem (I think) is that just like this video is mistaken about this being the same (less famous) "Whizzer White" who was Danny's dad, it's also mistaken about it being while Whizzer was on the BEARS. Everything I've seen has indicated he was on the LIONS.

@starryeyedrealist -- Thanks for the correction! In view of your post, I checked a bit more.....and here's the story:

Danny's dad ALSO had the nickname "Whizzer" and also was a football star -- but as you said, his real first name is Wilford, and he's not the same guy as this famous Whizzer White. (Thanks! I hate posting wrong stuff.) :-)

@starryeyedrealist In fact, Whizzer White never even played for the Bears and retired after the 1941 season, which means this audio clip must have been faked. I'm really not sure what's going on here.

@larchmontmark He's not. Either they did bad research (which may be the case; Danny White's first name is Wilford, not Whizzer's) or they just made the whole thing up to create a story line.
