Perhaps Chess Records was Motown's only rival during the 60's for sheer production values of rhythm & blues. "Selfish One" was one of Chess' best, and Jackie Ross took the recording which would be her only hit to #11 on the pop charts during the summer of 1964.
A true gem.

@BobbyLauser Right you are! That's whats so good about the "Tube". . . I've always recognized the two similarities, but never put them together - good post. I really enjoy the rich, rich history behind all of this music and particularly the MoTown phenom -

I was smart enough (lucky is more like it) to keep my old transister radio...with the 1-ear plug-in "headphone..haha) intact and in my closet for these last decades. It's in mint condition. Won't get rid of it, ever. God, I remember every other kid on the school bus back in the 60's had one too. Yeah...we were "hip" back then....all plugged in..haha. All of us kids would sing those hits out loud on that 45 min. bus ride. Man...to have those old innocent feelings back again...I'd pay anything.

I loved this song. Wonder what happened to her?

Because Mary Wells left Motown for 20th Century Fox Records immediately after her #1 smash: "My Guy"......Motown says there never was a follow-up. I disagree! Jackie Ross' hit "Selfish One" technically was the follow -up to "My Guy". "My Guy" opened with instrumental strains of "Canadian Sunset"; "Selfish One" opened with "Tenderly" Both were delivered in Mary Wells' vocal style!
