BBC Radio 4 Interview With 3 WWII Veterans

http://www.theunknownwarriors.co.uk In the run up to the 70th anniversary of the start of WWII, I was contacted by BBC 4, World at One and was asked if any of the veterans featured in the book would be able to visit their studios for an interview. I contacted 3 WWII veterans who were living in the London area and they were keen to go. So here is the feature, as it was news it was very brief and they only used a small part of the interviews, which is a shame because the three had enough dramatic stories to make a whole programme. George Hilman was at Dunkirk and also Monte Cassino, 'Jungle' George Fagence was a Royal navy Commando who had been out in Burma and Alec Alexander had served aboard HMS Sheffield (you can listen to a longer interview with him by clicking on my channel) He was at the Sinking of the Scharnhorst and was off Sword Beach on D-Day. Both Jungle Georges and Alecs family homes were badly damaged during the Blitz. Alec also was severely injured on his ship when a large steel plate fell from the turret, he broke his jaw, arm was in a coma and when he woke up was blind for a few weeks, he was taken to the American Miltary Hospital in Rekjavik, Iceland. George Hillman got off the beach at Dunkirk but his ship was hit and next remembers being back on the harbour, their memories can be read in the book, The Unknown Warriors. Sadly Alec and Jungle George both died of cancer within a year of this interview.
