about Randy Newman:
"You've Got a Friend in Me", was originally written, arranged, produced, played and sung by Randy Newman for the movie "Toy Story".
If you don't know about Randy Newman you should definitely check him out. I think he is one of the most talented singer/songwriters of America. What makes him especially interesting to me is his COMBINATION of talents: an amazing songwriter, a great piano player & singer and his unbelievably gifted ability to arrange for orchestra. I don't know of anyone else in the world who possesses a combination of talents like this, and then uses them to paint miniature musical portraits, always 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 minutes long!
What makes these concise musical statements even more special is that they are often not the typical 1st person voice that one is used to in singer/songwriting. Instead, Newman takes the listener on a journey into the minds of people we don't normally celebrate in song: bigots ("Rednecks", "Short People"), mourners ("Texas Girl At The Funeral of Her Father", "Old Man"), addicts ("Guilty"), killers ("In Germany Before the War"), and freaks [?] ("A Wedding in Cherokee County", "Davy the Fat Boy"). Randy Newman also explores religion and doubt ("I Think He's Hiding", "God's Song - That's Why I Love Mankind", "He Gives Us All His Love"), depression ("I Think It's Going To Rain Today"), politics ("The World isn't Fair", "Political Science") as well as events and places in American history ("Louisiana 1927", "Dayton, Ohio 1903", "Birmingham", "Baltimore", "I Love LA")
But these are my interpretations. The great thing about Randy Newman is that each of his songs, with its minimal use of words and ever-changing musical arrangements, can be interpreted in many different ways. That is the mastery of Randy Newman.
You must absolutely own the following CDs. Not the .mp3 versions, go out and buy the actual CDs. They are classics, you must have them physically in your home:

This doesn't sound anything like you've got a friend in me :\ and it's too long, But the group are excellent and I think the music is very relaxing :)

@747Kyle Hello Kyle, this is a jazz version of Randy Newman's great song. In jazz music sometimes the theme is played slightly different (if you listen a few times I think you will find it), and each musician makes a solo over the theme - that's why it is so long. What I really love about this song is it's form: the different sections really make the tune perfect for playing in a jazz way...
thanks for your comment!
