Two historic Gaelic football games to be played in Gaelic Park, New York, on Sunday 19th October.
CIE Transport Gaels will play a team from NYPD for the Moira Smith Perpetual Cup and later in the day they will meet a team from the New York Fire Department for the Alfonse Niedermeyer Perpetual Cup. (Times of matces; 12.30 and 04.15)
Moira Smith was the only female police officer to die at the WTC on that tragic day. Her father came from Larkfield Gardens in Dublin and this will be a moving experience for her family.
Alfonse Niedermeyer was one of the brave firemen to lose his life in the service of others on 9/11. His mother was from County Sligo and it will be a touching occasion for his loved ones.
This will be the first time the "Gaels" played in America and it will be an action-packed trip. The team will meet Cardinal at Saint Patrick's on the Sunday morning and on Monday evening players, committee and supporters (all 107 of us) will assemble at a well known venue in the Big Apple, each wearing his or her county jersey.
NYPD and Irishmafia are synonymous.
