Franz Schubert (1797-1829) wrote the music for "Ave Maria" in 1825 as a setting for words by Scottish author Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832). Scott published his long narrative poem, The Lady of the Lake. The heroine, Ellen, is forced to hide out in a mountain cave, along with her father, In that cave, she sings a song, "Hymn to the Virgin", a prayer to the Virgin Mary for help and comfort.
