  • Good looking dingo! I've been working my beagle to hunt rabbits. Not much of a rabbit shooter but I love to watch the hounds chase them down.

  • hey, I've got jackrabbits all over my property here, in a few months I could show him pointing for them.

  • thats great , he'll be a great side kick

  • @beast12101 thanks beast, glad you like him

  • Hi there,

I'm posting this more for the benefit of future viewers, since your dog is probably fully trained by now. The exercise with the wing must be very brief in the development of the puppy. As soon as you've got a good solid point, the wing goes away FOREVER. Next is introduction to birds. Otherwise all you do is teach the dog to chase birds (...long story - this is the short version...) Cheers!

  • It looks like he has allready learned the basics (How to point) what can i do with an puppy that hasn`t done that?

  • Let me start by saying that I don't think ANY breed of dog should have its tail "Docked" or cut off but it makes even less sense to dock the tail of a "Pointing" Dog as it uses its tail (and front paw) to point. I live in the UK any we would NEVER dock the tail of a hunting or bird dog. As a matter of fact, the British Kennel Club do NOT allow it!!

  • @greggunful Basically your dog has to learn that if it attacks, it doesn't get the wing. You have to be fast to do this. Also, start teaching whoa, and do this when your dog is tired/calmer. If at all possible, let him out where there are wild birds, there is no way he can catch them and he'll learn that he has to wait for you. You don't need to be hunting, but if he goes charging in on wild birds, they're just going to leave and he doesn't "win"

Or spend the cash and contact a pro trainer.

  • @Raaflower123 You can buy wings through bird dog supply companies (Lion Country/TBI/Gundogsupply) or ask another bird dog hunter, they should have a few around.

  • @Raaflower123 Pick up "Whoa dog Whoa" put out by tritronics. Wonderful video that takes you through it step by step.

  • @aburgard1 Do you have any videos or links that could tell me how to train for the Whoa command? Thanks:)

  • Best video I've seen so far! im just starting gun dog training. However, I don't have a bird wing, what could I use instead of this? Also, is 10 months too late to start training? Thanks for the vid!

  • @greggunful You'll want to do some basic Whoa training with a check coard at 6 months. They're moving pretty fast by then. Once they understand Whoa you can move onto birds with it.
