Here's the last movement of Rimsky-Korsakov's "Capriccio Espagnole" danced by the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo.

The entire piece was released as a short entitled "Spanish Fiesta." Later, Massine would appear in "The Red Shoes" and Toumanova in "Torn Curtain." Other dancers here included Danilova, Franklin, Krassovska and Eglevsky. Efrem Kurtz conducted and Jean Negulesco was the director.

This is one of the gaudiest, giddiest Technicolor dance numbers you'll ever see, doing for big screen ballet what Busby Berkeley's "The Gang's All Here" did for Hollywood musicals, at around the same time. As Rimsky's music builds, the color and motion can produce vertigo, if you're lucky.

  • Thank you, Panskeptic. I love Massine , Danilova, Toumanova and all the others. I found out that the other Negulesco's short film, "Gay Parisian", based on Gaité Parisienne, by Offenbach, was released as a bonus, inside a special 3 disc edition of "The Maltese Falcon". Where can I find this short film "Spanish Fiesta", with the Ballets Russes de Montecarlo, including Massine and Toumanova ? Does the word "gaudiest", which you used, come from "Gaudi" ?

  • @Stoclet I've sent you a private message through Youtube.

  • I have been looking for this for years. My father, Kazimir Kokich is standing stage right (left as you face screen) in the maroon vest, and knickers with the dark hair. I wish I could see the entire ballet film. Choura is at the end, with white head scarf

  • @KimKo57 I have sent you a private message through Youtube.

  • Remember having seen it more than 60 years ago and never forgot it. Never realized i could see it again. Thans. I love Tamara Toumanova and used to watch her films, MGM, so long time ago. Rockybrazil1

  • BRAVO! BRAVO!! Massine!!! The Great Massine holds his own quite Gracefully-especially considering his age(47) and the fact that most of the dancers onstage was at least 20 years younger than he... He was still quite a Beautiful Man; no wonder Diaghilev fell head over heels in Love... R.I.P. Leonide Massine.

  • Thank you PAnskeptic for this video....

  • Is the rest of it posted? I have dreamed of seeing this for so many years. What a thrill, I have tears in my eyes. I recognized Danilova and Eglevsky. Who was the exquisitely beautiful dancer maybe with Franklin near the end? Was that Krassovska?

Please find some film of Stroganova. Patricia Dokoudovsky has a Swan Lake filmed in the Bois de Boulogne with Vladimir Dokoudovsky and Nina Stroganova and company.
