Current GPS SatNav devices display just 2D information on the driver's location. But Navteq is building a database of 3D imagery to make the SatNav unit look like it is showing the real world. The navigation information is inserted on the screen as kind of an augmented reality layer.
Users can see car viewpoint, or can switch to birds-eye overfly view.
Eventually, the data will include the ability to touch onscreen a building, and get a listing of the businesses inside.
