A quick ride on the footplate of Mardy Monster - the huge OQ class Peckett 0-6-0ST at the Pontypool Railway. I was there with "Sir Gomer", Shackerstone's Peckett, as the engine rep. With "Gomer" taking a break, I was invited out onto the Monster for a trip. It was very loud. In this clip the Monster is pushing Whitehead and the train up the bank. The bark is deep and then, about half way through, 2nd valve is reached and the noise becomes almost too much for the camera (and me! - it was deafening - what a beast!).

  • Monster indeed! I filmed this run from the nearest droplight on the other side, it was one of the loudest steam locos I've had the pleasure of sampling. Shame it failed on Sunday, depriving more people of the experience. I understood that its innards needed attention anyway, as you describe in your blog.

  • @TimHall42 She lost alot of pressure on that run...200 went down 90, even with heavy firing. Maybe some lap and lead attention :)
