I haven't read any of the comments on this, but i hope everyone recognizes that the acoustic singers were intentionally keeping it mellow, unoriginal, and as straight-up as possible. the moment was for sharon, and they gave it to her (i mean, she earned it for SURE, but i'm just saying).

In as much as I really like Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and her rendition of this classic, and the Dark Was the Night singers really could have sung it (more than) a bit more uptempo, there's really no need to denigrate the more traditional performance. The melody in her version has no likeness to the original Guthrie tune -- the only thing she is using are the lyrics.
