Marine Corps Ball China 2011
Embassy Ball speech Beijing / Peking-- November 2011 by P T Brent

Audio / Visual hampered by hotel regs et cetera - remedial action by 808Burners & a Marine named Walter .... OOO RRAH !

shortened Text of speech

Wow - look around - These Embassy Marines, these Leathernecks -- there is something here not to be admired (applause).

Imagine : Marines, serving the State Department Embassies, go back to the era of Thomas Jefferson- protecting

ambassadors all the way back to the Shores of Tripoli. -- they possess a long and noble history

When I was invited by Gunny Cruise -to travel 8000 miles - Why? This is special My father was a d

call.... Marine . He also was an Embassy Marine. On a small personal note this birthday, this week, represents my 50th slice of birthday cake
, the first was on a small island off the coast of South Carolina and ---- only got about 29 seconds to enjoy

it. A great Sea Story ending...
St. Peter looks at the Admiral and says Admiral that's not a Marine, (.....) that's God -- you see Admiral,
(.....) God always wished he had been a Marine. In the process of doing research I noticed the next to last page of
the program and a very simple picture of the eagle, globe and anchor.
The French have an expression --

je ne sais quoi -

that mystery something --
means you either
get it or you don't.

If you don't get it you may never get it. Marines are special

As this research progressed I learned there is yet another Ambassador who has quite a story to tell much like

Ambassador Lock. Came up through Brooklyn, New York, Irish immigrant, grocery business. Finally this extraordinary American goes to

Montana, born in 1903 on the day before Saint Paddy's day -- one day short , one exceptional American. At the age of 14 with virtually no education( 7th grade ) and World
War I approaching he joined the US Navy. Two year hitch, then
discharged -- joined the US Army, came out and then he got it right,
saw the light, a famous date 10 November, 1920 he joins the Marine
Corps - Marine, Philippine Marine. He leaves the Corps ---------- and
returns to Montana,--- started school from scratch --- working as a
miner in Butte Montana -- self studied and passed the exams for college
-graduated from the University of Montana BA & Masters and taught for
ten -- this Marine Veteran was elected to seven terms to the U.S.
Congress. As congressman he sponsored the Douglas-Mansfield Bill 29
June 1952 equal status for CMC on Joint Chiefs & guaranteed three
divisions and air wings

Went to the U.S. Senate for 24 years, one of the most famous senators of all time. He sponsored and created the

Equal Rights amendment and after 24 years in the senate --- became Ambassador to Japan for 12 years where he had

many honors, statues -- and at age of 85 he came back to America to serve in other capacities. Finally

this exceptional man dies at the age of 98. Where would he be buried? He could have had a monument in Montana; he could have been up on that hill in Arlington cemetery with the eternal

Flame.
What did he choose -- - remember he has been in every branch of the
military and had every honor America could bestow - he chose to be
back in the quiet section two, row 49-69F , with a plain stone marker
and on this stone is engraved Michael Joseph Mansfield, Private, US Marines Just think about that
Buried next to his Irish wife Maureen.

As you may know I've spent some time with active duty Marines in faraway places and today's Marines are the best

we have ever had. I often wonder if I wore the same fabric. You know as I travel, visit schools, or attend board meetings I'm asked about leadership and what course I would

recommend. Assuming I learned leadership at a school or business.

Like anything else I knew they didn't want the answer I was going to
give them so I gave it to them straight

I said look at me --- look at me -- look into my eyes -
, look at me, look in my eyes. I learned leadership 24 hours a day, seven days a week at the same place, Parris

Island from every NCO and every Marine officer I met. Why, because our Corps is immersed in a culture of excellence

founded on virtue and discipline.

Now I would like to ask you all to raise a glass with me -- a toast to our Corps 236 years of rompin' stompin'

rootin' tootin' Marines.
OOO - RRRAH ! Semper Fi.

any weapon sized award in the hands of an Irishman is a wild call.
