Seems kind of useless without the local forecast. Is there any way for the phone to detect where you are and provide a local feed like on cable?

I believe they make an exception, if you have mobiletv it doesnt use up your data plan, it does use your data, but it wouldnt chew at your payable data. You pay $15 a month for TV and thats it. I have an unlimited plan.

it makes sense to me, theres no ldl bar at the bottom of the screen either, as i guess its not really able to get a local cable feed using a cell phone
