On February 15, 1989, the Soviet Union finished the withdrawal of its troops from Afghanistan. The Soviet military presence in this Central Asian country lasted almost ten years and cost the lives of almost 15,000 Soviet servicemen. 20 years on the war in Afghanistan still rages on this time between the NATO coalition and mujaheddin movement known as the Taliban.
Well be talking about the Afghan war with its eyewitness and veteran Aleksandr Kovalyov, who is also the First Deputy Chairman of the Central Administration of the Russian Union of Afghan War Veterans.
@mehle3 I see it a bit differently.
Both wars were lost because US and Soviet people started to react very negatively to the war. If the people don't support the war, then you can't fight. Both wars were also very expensive. The terrain in Afghanistan is like one underground fortress after another - lots of big natural caves to hide your troops in. It is very difficult to fight a foe who is using these caves and also disguising itself as civilians.

Alexander the Great- arguably greatest military genius of all time Ghengis Khan-forged largest continuous empire in history British Empire- Largest empire the world has ever known The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics- Superpower. Have all been defeated and driven out of Afghanistan when will people learn? "youve got the watch weve got the time" Afghan saying, thank God Americas not pissing them off and keeping the civilian deathtoll low otheriwse the American body count would be 7000 not 700

Also it's funny to see that he's claiming that 60% of their mission was humniterian and menssions "youth oranization and some construction projects" not specifying any because there were none. They just wanted to break Afghanistan, but they cracked themselves. One thing you should remember, if you fuck with Afghans they fuck with you that's the bottom line.

I agree it is a stupid comparison. The Soviets fought on the side of social progress, i.e a developed Afghanistan free from mullah tyranny and backwardness. Unlike the Americans and their NATO puppies, the Soviets had no intention of permanent occupation. In fact just a few months ago a Kabul resident said that the Soviets actually gave something to the Afghans unlike USA/NATO who looks at them as sand n*ggers, camel jockeys, dune coons, etc.
