In this video we are covering the basic supplies you will need to grow algae. This video series is geared towards teachers and students but can be used by anyone. Our goal is to show you how to grow algae with easily available and inexpensive equipment. Keep in mind that getting algae to grow fast requires a different environment than getting it to make lipids. These first videos will show you how to get it growing fast. Later videos will cover how to increase lipid production.

  • Great job on the video...I'm interested in trying this for myself but where can I find an air filter that size...to be able to fit that size tubing? I'm not having much luck finding one, can you point me in the right direction?

  • @BlackGaara021 We have found several good HEPA filters for sale by do-it-yourself beer brewing kits and websites. To get the larger ones check with one of the biological supply companies.

  • Hi, i have a question. Where can i get the rubber stoppers with the 2holes? Because i am searching on VWR site and all but they cant help me

  • @Axelkef I think we found them on Carolina Biological (But I think we went with a cheaper dealer). I think we will go with foam stoppers in the future. There is just too much variability in the flasks to get all the stoppers to work. There should be some foam stoppers out there with a single hole.

  • with the plastic bottles wouldnt the chemicals in the plastic leak into the algae because of the suns heat? would this affest the algae at all?

  • @Madcow800 A lot of testing has gone into the safety of water bottles. Of course that doesn't mean we won't find something new that is dangerous. Those dangers tend to be long term dangers to long-lived organisms such as cancer to individuals like humans. In the short term there does not appear to be any negative affect on the algae. Anybody doing this on a commercial scale will be using something other than plastic drinking bottles (but probably using plastic)
