Toxin now has a Symbiote sister named Scorn.However she looks more like a purple armoured robot than a Symbiote.It's host is Tanis Nieves(She-Carnage).

I disagree that more present day cues, spec. the Al Quada mention, means that the story couldn't have happened earlier. The storyline doesn't really have any set era. There's a timeline - a chronological arrangement of events - but no era. The setting modernizes with real life but it doesn't reflect an in-story passage of time.

The relatively new "One Moment in Time" arc had Mary Jane owning a flat screen TV immediately after the day of the wedding.
