1990, and the end of the great wave of privatisations: the electrics. National Power and Powergen were invented in 1989 specifically for the purpose of being sold off. They were given the responsibility for the actual generation of the electricity itself (previously handled by the state-run CEGB) while the newly profit-motivated electricity boards controlled the supply.

The most famous ad/PIF in this campaign is the one for which they actually managed to get the licence for proper Star Trek, which was clearly trying far too hard to be funny but was still pretty awesome just because Shatner and Doohan were in it. This one features Uri Geller instead, cutlery-bothering as usual. Both - indeed all the various adverts in the campaign - are hosted by Simon Cadell, the most dapper man on Earth, whose presence in a Star Trek movie-vintage Enterprise set is somehow one of the best things ever.

  • simon cadell was an acting genius. his voice was perfect and used in several roles as a voice over. a strange coincidence about this ad is the closing date for the share offer was march the 6th. a few years later simon cadell passed away on march the 6th.

  • What the fuck did I just watch?

  • Uri bloody Geller? C'mon the Amazing Randi would have done it better, and probably cheeper too.
