An old jazz classic by New Orleans trombonist Edward "Kid" Ory in 1926. I used to play this in a mainstream jazz band in the late 70s. Old hippies will recognise the main (second) theme as the tune that was adapted by Country Joe McDonald for "Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag" - which hit its popularity peak at the time of the Woodstock Festival.

Full, free music/tab/chords for this is available from my website at:

  • Merci Will ,

    Peace

    Babette Ory

  • Many thanks - great to see that the Ory name still lives on. The Kid was a great player! :-) Will

  • I was just listening to my Louis Armstrong Hot fives and Sevens cds and the liner notes mentioned that although Kid Ory is credited he most likely only came up with the title and that it is really an uncredited Louis Composition. I don't know if that's true, but I thought it was interesting.

  • Yes - that's interesting. I guess we'll never know. :-)

  • Part of it reminds me of "Fixin to Die Rag" by Joe MacDonald

  • Correct Howard - take a peek at the "more info" link on the top right of this page... :-) Will

  • @Howard492 Read the introductory piece at the top and you'll see that that's precisely what it is. Country Joe MacDonald simply took this tune and added his own excellent words. This is a classical piece of music from a much earlier time. Peace to you.

  • @chefessboo Wonderful to read the words of his daughter. I wish you well-being and peace.
