So here I am building the HTPC. I spent a good half hour planning out the build so that I didn't make mistakes or have to re-do any part.
I was pretty close except I had to pull the sound card and tuner out to plug the front panel FireWire header in.

I'm also a cable nut and hate cables spread out all over the PC so i did the best job I could without cable ties.

Turning the beast on was a worry, i seriously thought that it wouldn't turn on, but it did!

Oh, and isn't the Asus Xonar pretty!

  • can you use the monitor with an off button on the front like start, mce, back etc. buttons?

  • When MediaPortal is running i gives me standard playback buttions, volume and navigation buttions to get around mediaportal.

I never close MediaPortal, just put the PC to sleep when not in use using the remote or keyboard. When turning it back on it resumes from sleep in about 4 secods

  • Most the sound comes from your video card. It's meant for gaming not HTPC, I use a HD 6450 and because it is passively cooled (no fan) it's completely silent and doesn't overheat as there isnt a huge demand from it. You could also get a program like Riva Tuner and reduce the fan speed but monitor the temps.

  • Don't use IDE, It's sucks

  • What was that flash drive looking thing in the back of the HTPC?

  • Love the way you have speeded up the video along with the music, very informative...good job!

  • The components are pretty awesome. Nice board, RAMs and htpc case.

  • i love asus

  • @windekind27 that's what i thought ...thanks 4 reply

  • @kamikazeOS If you're only going to use S/PDIF passthrough (optical), it makes no sense investing in an expensive soundcard; your receiver takes on the task of decoding and processing sound.

  • I need opinions :D ...I want to buy a Pioneer A/V receiver should I let the onbord sound cuz I only need optical out...or should I invest in a sound card?

    thanks in advance.

  • You have got to be so fucking RICH!!!! That was expensive :'(
