DAY 1 | GET TO KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS
When I was growing up, we kept to ourselves, probably a little more than we should have. None of the six children spent the night at anyone's house, and nobody's friends slept over at our house. The next-door neighbors didn't visit us and we didn't visit them. In fact, I couldn't tell you the names of any of our neighbors, whom we lived next to for most of my childhood years. Sure, I remember some of their faces, but they just waved and smiled, and we did the same. Frankly, I always thought that it was a bit strange, but I didn't ask any questions. I did what I was told: "Stay out of other people's business and don't let them get into yours." Now, as an adult myself, I know this is not necessarily the best practice, especially if you are a business owner.
If you don't know who your neighbors are, go visit them and introduce yourself. And while you are at it, visit City Hall and make an appointment to meet with your mayor and other city leaders. It will make all the difference in the world. You should know who they are and what they do and they should be as familiar with you. There is nothing worse than waiting until you actually have a problem and need their help, before you get to know your neighbors. It may surprise you to discover that they're not as bad as you might think, and they may actually want to see you be successful. Ask if they need help with anything, and be willing to roll up your sleeves if they do.
If you've already made all the right introductions drop in for a visit, but don't be fooled into believing that everyone will remember who you are. Gladly, reintroduce yourself if necessary, and do your part to maintain and nurture these important relationships.
