The Petroff Defence (sometimes called the Russian Defence, and named after Russia's Alexander Petrov, 1794-1867) is considered as one of Black's most reliable and solid methods of meeting the king's pawn opening. It is easy to play and an excellent choice for someone looking for an alternative to the Scotch Opening, the Italian Game and the 'Spanish torture' of the Ruy Lopez.

Until a few years ago, the Petroff was an opening that was favored by only a few top Grandmasters, including Anatoly Karpov and Artur Yusupov. However, the last few years have seen a dramatic rise in its popularity, and it now provides battlefields for many top clashes of the modern elite players, including Anand, Kramnik, Leko, Topalov, and Shirov. And in the latest of his "New Ideas in..." series, GM Ronen Har-Zvi, takes a closer look under the microscope at the solid Petroff.

  • I think all the variations are not fully covered. I like to add that my favourite line against the Petroff defence is

    1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Nxe5 d6 4. Nxf7 Kxf7....I have won alot of games against a very strong computer software by playing this line. The advantage for white is that black is stopped stops from castling and its piece develpment is greatly hindered

  • skydust11 - The other defence he is talking about could be Marshall Attack.

    F2L4Life - Another symetrical line is: 1.e4 e5 2.Nxe5 d6 3.Nf3 Nxe4 4.d3 Nf6 5.d4 d5 and we have an Exchange French structure but no advantage for White.

haclya - The sacrifice with Nxf7 is nothing for White and Black as a better game! :-)

  • You mentioned 1 of the 2 best defense for black vs 1. e4. What was the other one vs e4?. To me any semi opening move by black vs e4 like e6, c6 or d6 seems weak. e6 and c6 seem weaker to me than d6 because of the fact of an e5 adv, to prevent Nf6, then if e6, it blocks Queens Bishop. and with pawns on d4&e5 any attack to f2 via g1-h7 diagonal by King bishop is null N void if a 0-0 by white. To me any equal def by black must be a 2 pawn move, c5 or e5, and i'm leaning more to e5 to block an adv

  • After 1. e4 e5 2. Nxe5 d6 3. Nf3 Nxe4

White can play 4. Qe2 which generally results in a very symmetrical game.

  • In this posision white can sacrifce the knight stop the kink from castling e4-e5 Nf3-Nf6 Nf3xe5-d6

Nf5xf7-Kxf7 nex move from white is d3 he loses a knight but the posision is won by white.

  • The quality of the ICC videos alone are worth the subscription fee, not to mention all the other stuff you get...5 star

  • indiana jones

  • nice video! are you Israeli? or Russian?

  • great post, great opening

I was wondering though, you left out another key variation for white (one I play alot) namely, 3. Bc4
