State Senator Kwame Raoul, State Representative Marlow Colvin and Rev. Walter Turner will lead the Safe and Fair Education (SAFE) Coalition a wide contingent of teachers, parents, ministers and community leaders in calling for the Chicago Public Schools to restore funding to after-school tutoring programs funded through the Supplemental Educational Services (SES) program. Despite just over $115 million in federal Title I funds allocated specifically for the program, CPS has decided to spend a little more than half of that amount. As a result, approximately 40,000 students have been cut from the program, raising concerns about unilateral decision-making and putting more youth at risk.

The children and young people of our community need and deserve every opportunity to learn, be successful and stay safe, said Turner. After school tutoring programs are more critical today than ever before, and it is unfortunate that CPS would decide to cut the program without any discussion.

Hundreds of phone calls and letters are being sent to Board of Education President Michael Scott requesting that the Board direct CPS to restore funding to after-school tutoring programs.
