Rough Cuts were winners of a 1980 talent contest organised by journalists Neil Hooper and Paul Colbert for UK magazine Musicians Only. ... all » The entry was a demo cassette tape for a rock opera called 'Arcadia', aka 'Alice Through The Jukebox' written by Hamish Pringle.
The "Fantastic Plastic" track, with music by Hudson/Wyverne, was produced and recorded by Peter Hughes at the Radio Luxembourg Studios, Hertford Street, London W1.
The competition prize, was a one-hour video recording session donated by Robbie Wilson, Managing Director of Nomis Studios. This video was recorded on one fixed VHS camera at 45-53 Sinclair Road, London, W14 on 8th September 1980.
The Rough Cuts band had been recruited by Simon Pringle who was working at Sunshine Records, Oxford. For the video the band wore bespoke Levis specially made from black denim through David Riddiford (then Sarah Molloy's boyfriend)and sponsored by John Hart, Levi's UK Marketing Director.
The "Fantastic Plastic" video was indicative of a key scene in the 'Arcadia' rock opera in which old singles are recycled in the Soul Kitchen.

OMG!!!! Just found this! Can't believe it's been here all this time. We all looked so Young.... and soooooooo Thin! Can't believe it was nearly 30 years ago......
Really wish we could have a proper copy of this. My personal preference of all the tracks was Never Paid Out. Still remember the words to all of them.... so sad! Showed this to Dave yesterday and he was totally blitzed by it all. LOL
Love you guys!

P.S. When youve never paid out
You get a bigger belly button full
When youve never paid out
You get a wider wily wallet full
You get fatter and fatter
You get wider and wider

Nice to see this again. I recall the fun and games we had at the video shoot (and there we all are with our tight black pants and 28" waists....)
I have mostly lost touch with the other musicians, having been in California since then, but I know Graham Bond went on to drum with the likes of Roger Waters.
Thanks Hamish, for putting this on the Tube!

Phil, not being a true web 2.0 person I've only just seen your post - apologies. How great that you've found the video! I still love it and often wonder what if...
With very best wishes, Hamish

This whole posting the video idea came about because Graeme Googled me and got in touch. One thing led to another and Vivienne got the master Beta tape transferred onto a CD-Rom - by the way an excellent service by Amir at Evermedia who transfer content from one format to another.
Anyway I saw Graeme this week and he'd hardly changed! Great to see him and hear about new life in Dordogne after a successful career in radio.
