How to make a gauntlet in metal. This was created as a film prop for my next book trailer (same as a movie trailer only for a book). If you haven't already seen my trailer for my first book, please take a look at my other videos.

You can use this information to help you make any gauntlet design or other pieces of armor.

The metal in this video is brass. .032 for the fingers, and .05 for the rest. You can probably get by using .032 for all of it...I just used what I had. Most of you will want to use stainless steel, but if you do use brass, you will need to protect it because it will tarnish. If you clear lacquer on it, (like musical instruments, etc have) it will chip and flake off because the metal pieces touch and scratch. Use olive oil as a protectant, rubbing it in and then buffing it dry. Reapply as needed.

Please Subscribe! I will sub back.

ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS:

NOTE: Make sure your rivets are not too tight or you will not be able to move the parts.

Start with the fingers. Attach the Finger Parts marked with numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 to the part of your fingers where you would wear a ring (closest to the palm I mean). 1 is pointer finger, 2 is middle finger, 3 is ring finger, and 4 is pinky finger. Pay attention to the arrows. These parts have to be riveted right through the glove (this will drive you nuts, but don't give up). On the template, notice that some holes marked for the rivets are just a hole, and some are a star kinda like this *. The holes marked with a * are meant to be riveted right through the glove.

Next, moving down the fingers, towards your fingernails, comes the piece marked Knuckle 1. You will need 4 of these (per hand), one for each finger (the thumb one is a little different). The Knuckle 1 pieces connect to the 1A, 1B, 1C and 1D pieces. Next is Knuckle 2. This works in the same way as Knuckle 1, but is at your next knuckle joint down. The last piece for the fingers is the Finger Tip. You will need 5 Finger Tips (per hand). Keep in mind that the Knuckle Pieces (bothe Knuckle 1 and Knuckle 2) fit OVER the Finger Pieces (1, 1A, Finger Tip, 2, 2A, Finger Tip, etc). Also, take note that some of the pieces down at the end of the finger also have a * and must be riveted through the glove's fingers.

For the thumb, put the tip on first, then The Thumb Knuckle. The Thumb Knuckle will need to be bent outwards some on the side closest to your hand so that it fits over Thumb 1 better. Use longer rivets here and leave them looser than normal. Then Thumb 1. I forgot to mark it, but the 2 holes in Thumb 1 closest to your palm should have a *, and get riveted through the glove. Now place Thumb 4 on the glove, in position, and rivet it tightly to the glove ONLY. Thumb 3 overlaps Thumb 4, but is NOT connected to it. Rivet Thumb 3 to the glove in the same manner. Thumb 2 overlaps Thumb 3...rivet it to the glove directly also. 2 rivets will be left uncovered and showing on Thumb 2.

Now connect the Knuckle Plate to the finger parts.

Next is Hand 1. This is bent inward enough that it fits INSIDE of the Knuckle Plate. Then Hand 2 fits inside Hand 1. Hand 3 then fits inside Hand 2.

Next is Wrist 1. It fits INSIDE of Hand 3.

Connected to Wrist 1 is Wrist 2, but this time it fits OVER Wrist 1.

The last piece is the Vambrace, which fits OVER Wrist 2.

The order is as follows:

Finger Tip

Knuckle 2

1A (2A, 3A 4A)

Knuckle 1

1 (2, 3, 4)

Knuckle Plate

Hand 1

Hand 2

Hand 3

Wrist 1

Wrist 2

Vambrace

Vambrace Underside (goes on bottom of Vambrace near the wrist)

Finger Tip

Thumb Knuckle

Thumb 1

Thumb 2

Thumb 3

Thumb 4

  • Hey David! Thanks for the video! Just finished making my own gauntlet, and although I'm not satisfied with it at all, it was awesome working on it and I've learned so so much! I'm going to create my own design now, and hopefully it'll turn out just as beautiful as yours. I'll upload a video eventually showing the movement and articulation, and I'd show a picture in the meantime, but it seems youtube won't let me. That, or you'll have a ton of duplicate comments in a few moments. ;D

  • @HouseRex great, glad you attempted it and enjoyed the process. Looking forward to seeing your pics and your video when you upload it. Let me know when you do.

  • vary nice vid man. love the explaining of your different home made tools and how you used them.. for a long time i have been wondering how to bend fingers and how knuckles where to be made. awesome.

  • @zeddarain Well thank you very much. Glad you enjoyed the video and if you need any help with your future projects I'll be happy to help however I can

  • Alright, so in my shop class I decided to use your design to make one of these. But I don't have the copper things, so far I have everything for the arm made and bent, but I'm not sure how to make the rivet holes that are stretched so the rivet can move so the glove can move on the hand plates, any tips?

  • @lexpederson for the elongated holes, drill several holes overlapping each other, and then go over the elongated holes with a small file to smooth it out and make it even

  • Nicely made. May I suggest an addition to your tools if you are cutting a lot of sheet. Harbor Freight has a relatively inexpensive throatless shear that cuts through the type of brass sheet you are using like butter.

  • @apateck53 the design can be found in the downloadable template under the video where it says "Show More"

  • wait where did the design go in i didnt see the design you made in the gauntlet

  • very nice , very nice...
