When describing the quintessential American sedan, car enthusiasts no-doubt mention V8 engines and rear-wheel drive. So it is surprising that Pontiac, General Motor's supposed performance division, hasn't offered that powertrain combination for years. Classic car fans can now rejoice: the Pontiac G8 is a thoroughly modern car that harkens back to the rear-wheel-drive glory days of American sedans.

Having been out of the rear-drive V8 game for a while, Pontiac found inspiration in Australia where high-power sedans have thrived for decades. Essentially a re-badged Australian-market sedan, the G8 delivers a much-needed performance punch for Pontiac, in both V6 and V8 flavors.

  • @hsvsv8 also, bugger the VE SS & FG F6. Give me an HK GTS 327 Bathurst Monaro & a Phase III XY GTHO Falcon in my 2 car garage anyday.

  • @fpvshitsonhsv The import figures are not counted in the local sales division. The sales figures you see where Commodore has been #1 for so long until last year are sales in Australia only. Global sales do not count.

Ford Oz are in trouble with no export options. Ford US will not import F6 or XR6 or GT Falcons due to the embarassment that the American public will notice that Ford Oz make cars that are above & beyond anything that Ford US release.

  • @fpvshitsonhsv Holden has had partnerships with both Nissan & Toyota. The R31 Skyline was more Australian than the VL Turbo (the original Turbo 6 "hero" car). We all remember the Toyota Lexcen, unfortunately.

As for the 5 star ANCAP rating. The BF was the first Aussie car to get it. The VE still hadn't at that stage until they added the extra airbags. But it was only a year or 2 between, not 5.

The Focus reignited sales due to the XR5 Turbo version. Aided by Police using them on highways.

  • @fpvshitsonhsv Yes im not ignorant and can not deny Holden dominated the sales in 90's, however 2000's was a new story as imports for Holden was the only thing making them keep the lead. Without importing Holden was third in sales to Australia, Toyota first the Ford and Holden. There is also no doubt the xr6 turbo range converted Holden fans to Ford. Both cars have good and bad Era's and i know your not that ignorant to dislike a nice GT Falcon. Forget my YT Aussie for the win!!

  • @hsvsv8 Mazda is owned by Ford nowadays, This has been going on since the 1982 323 and laser. Just like the days old Holden merging with Nissan, however Ford and Mazda stuck Holden and Nissan did not or should i say GM. Ford Focus was 2nd to Toyota Corolla. Yes Toyota blows the world out the water with sales but focas still did extremely well. Also dont dis Falcon range as they where 5 star ancap rating 5 years before Holden ever was until the VE, which is on par as far as ratings.

  • @hsvsv8 I know all of that. . I am a Holden man after all

  • @fpvshitsonhsv You've either been mislead into believing that or the figures you've read have been doctored.

Again, Commodore outsold every other car for 15 straight years. Holden has outsold Ford every year bar 1 since 1995 & it was a European car (Focus), that gave Ford the upper hand that time. Once the madness passed & people realised how expensive to maintain they were, their sales dropped exponentially & Ford resumed its place behind Toyota, Holden & Mazda.

  • @fpvshitsonhsv There's no doubting how great the F6 is. My cousin has a Mk 2 BF F6 & after a few mods she pulls a 12.7. A great car & goes like the clappers & shits all over Holden 6's. Keeps the V8's honest. But the figures being touted about the new FG Turbo variants are a stretch. I have a 2011 Series 2 VE SS ute & in stock trim I accounted for an equally stock FG XR6 Turbo ute at the drags on both runs. The cars are so evenly matched now that the drivers are the telling difference.

  • Found it amusing when the guy says the car was designed for America.

Um, no it wasn't. The car was designed & built for Australia, but with the potential in mind of exporting it. The car was simply rebadged with a different grille & front bar & LHD conversion for America.

  • @SonofthePhantom Also the only reason Ford outsold Holden then was due to the European Focus. They were also aided by the fact that Holden was in it's last year or 2 of the VT (which by then had been altered to be a VX, VY & then VZ), prior to the release of the VE.

The Commodore was the #1 selling car in Australia from 1995 to 2010. 15 consecutive years until in 2011 the Mazda 3 series pipped it for #1 selling car in Oz.
