You don't need two batteries to use the grip.

I just bought a grip for my Canon 550D. And when i put new regular batteries it says ''Change the Battery'' .. And shows a low battery sign..

If you use deet bug repelant when using these after market grips, expect them to melt in your hands. Mine did.
