The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (typically abbreviated GATT) was negotiated during the UN Conference on Trade and Employment and was the outcome of the failure of negotiating governments to create the International Trade Organization (ITO). GATT was formed in 1949 and lasted until 1993, when it was replaced by the World Trade Organization in 1995. The original GATT text (GATT 1947) is still in effect under the WTO framework, subject to the modifications of GATT 1994.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations established on 16 November 1945. Its stated purpose is to contribute to peace and security by promoting international collaboration through education, science, and culture in order to further universal respect for justice, the rule of law, and the human rights along with fundamental freedoms proclaimed in the UN Charter. It is the heir of the League of Nations' International Commission on Intellectual Cooperation.
UNESCO has 193 Member States and seven Associate Members. The organization is based in Paris, with over 50 field offices and many specialized institutes and centres throughout the world. Most of the field offices are "cluster" offices covering three or more countries; there are also national and regional offices. UNESCO pursues its objectives through five major programs: education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, and communication and information. Projects sponsored by UNESCO include literacy, technical, and teacher-training programmes; international science programmes; the promotion of independent media and freedom of the press; regional and cultural history projects; the promotion of cultural diversity; international cooperation agreements to secure the world cultural and natural heritage (World Heritage Sites) and to preserve human rights, and attempts to bridge the worldwide digital divide.
Mother Jones (abbreviated MoJo) is an independent, nonprofit magazine, rooted in liberal and progressive political values. It is widely known for its investigative reporting. Mother Jones has been nominated for 23 National Magazine Awards and has won six times, including for General Excellence in 2001, 2008, and 2010.
With a paid circulation of 230,000 (the average for the second half of 2008), Mother Jones magazine is the most widely read liberal publication in the United States. Monika Bauerlein and Clara Jeffery serve as co-editors. Jay Harris has served as publisher since 1991.
The magazine was named after Mary Harris Jones, called Mother Jones, an Irish-American trade union activist, opponent of child labor, and self-described "hellraiser." The stated mission of Mother Jones is to produce revelatory journalism that in its power and reach informs and inspires a more just and democratic world.
Mother Jones is published by the Foundation for National Progress, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. Mother Jones and the FNP are based in San Francisco.

"Perhaps that's why he [Gingrich] teaches History in some diploma mill down south" - Newt's peculiar historical interpretations are just as amusing then as they are now in 2012.

@redryan20000 Agreed. This "if only we spent the money we earned more wisely" shtick is getting old. People don't buy organic because it's more expensive, they shop at Wal-Mart because it's cheaper than American Apparel. So when you opine that people aren't using their vote (their dollar) correctly, you're making a value judgement based on what you consider "things done the right way", but the reality is most people don't have that luxury.

@redshiftexperiment i hate this "educate yourself" bullshit. such pseudo-intellectual nonsense that really means nothing and has no thought involved.
redryan20000 1 month ago
educate yourself first before you act in this world. If you want higher wages for your children, then vote. I don't mean just vote for the right politician. Vote with your dollars!! or buying food from organic farmers who are doing the right things the right way. That means NOT buying clothes that were made in 3rd world countries with no human rights legislation. Vote with your money and stop being such a victim! then you wonder why your son earns $8/hour and you have cancer.

@H1TMANactual They're not entirely the same (for instance not all in the rightwing supported the Iraq war- books have been written about neocons hijacking party etc), but many cannot see difference between a socialist and a corporatist. The latter category is where Obama belongs too, as does the republican party.

@Hirnlego999 Cool story bro. Tell me more about the collective behavior of right wingers.

LOL @ Bill Clinton is a socialist. Rightwingers cannot differentiate between corporatist and socialists. No wonder they vote as they do.

This was about the height of Newt Gingrich's power, about two months from becoming Speaker of the House. When he was relatively popular.
