Home by Daughtry - a tribute to John Candy

An American band who took home several music awards in 2007 and 2008. Their self-titled debut album released in 2006 reached # 1 for two non-consecutive weeks on the Billboard Top 200. It sold more than four million copies and was named the # 1 selling album of 2007 by Billboard. Their album is the top selling debut album in Soundscan history.

The single 'Home' peaked at # 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and was the 10th most played song in the US in 2007. 'Its not over' from the same album peaked at # 4 on the Billboard and was the 8th most played song across all formats on US radio in 2007.

"Chris Daughtry wrote the song on the couch the day before he left for American Idol. The theme of the song centers around the singer being grateful for what he has, but still longing for his family. Therefore, he realizes it is best if he comes home, where he is surrounded by love.

He states during the chorus:

I dont regret this life you chose for me
But these places and these faces are getting old
So Im going home

"In the UK the song was released on January 7, 2008 as the first single from the album (Its Not Over was originally going to be the first single there, but its UK release was canceled at the last minute)."

"John Franklin Candy was born in Toronto, Canada, October 31, 1950. Candy grew up in Scarborough, Canada, where he was known as an intelligent student and talented football player at Neil McNeil high school. After graduation, Candy enrolled in a local community college, where he took a handful of drama courses and discovered his passion for comedy and acting."

"An active sports fan, he became co-owner of his favorite boyhood Canadian Football team, the Toronto Argonauts. The Argonauts won the Grey Cup during Candy's first year of ownership, and Candy was known as a tireless worker and fan, who operated largely behind the scenes. He also opened a chain of blues restaurants with former "Blues Brothers" star, Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi's brother, Jim. Candy also studied acting from behind the scenes, making his directorial debut with Fox Network's "Hostage For A Day." ......"John Candy died unexpectedly of a heart attack March 4, 1994, while filming on location in Durango, Mexico. He was 44 years old. His funeral, held at St. Michael's Cathedral, was broadcast live on TV in Canada. Candy is survived by his wife, Rose, and two children, Jennifer and Christopher. Candy's final movies, "Wagons East" and "Canadian Bacon" were released after his death."

Although Candy played in many films and shows, I think the 80's brought his best performances (personally for me anyways). Films such as 'The Great Outdoors' (1988), 'Uncle Buck' (1989), 'Planes, Trains, and Automobiles' (1987), are among some that I love. I went with friends to see 'The Great Outdoors' in the theatre and its been a great memory for me ever since. Maybe similar to the song by Daughtry, John Candy was away while filming in the United States... but Canada was always his HOME.

Candy co-starred in films with actors/comedians Steve Martin and Dan Aykroyd, two of my favourites from Hollywood. He was a bigger than life Canadian talent who left us far too early.

  • I think my all time favorite John Candy movie will have to be "The Great Outdoors". He was at his funniest in that movie. One line I cannot stop quoting from him:

"What happened?! COME ON, WHAT HAPPENED?! How about Roman dragging me all over the god damn lake, how about that for starters, huh? Not bad, huh? Have you seen my ass lately?! I'll be pickin' splinters out of it from now until the day I die!"

RIP, John Candy, you were a hilarious man.
