Arts, Entertainment, & History - Carlisle, PA

Carlisle is a town brimming with history, and boasts an impressive number of art, music, and entertainment venues.

Predating the Revolution by decades, Carlisle's traditional town square features ancient constructions including 2 18th-century churches and the Old Courthouse.

The town has seen many legendary visitors, including George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. Declaration of Independence signatory James Wilson was a long-time resident, and Confederate General Richard Ewell set the town ablaze on his way to the Battle of Gettysburg.

Revolutionary heroine Molly Pitcher is buried in the Old Graveyard, and the hauntingly beautiful Ashland Cemetary is the final resting place for many Gettysburg soldiers.

If local history interests you, check out the Cumberland County Historical Society's award-winning museum.

Art lovers enjoy Dickinson College's Trout Gallery, which hosts national and international traveling exhibits.

The Carlisle Arts Learning Center is a major community asset, providing arts education for all ages., and independent galleries like the Garden Gallery and Fly Away Home can be found throughout town.

For a great show, check out art, films, and live performances at the Carlisle Regional Performing Arts Center, a beautifully-restored 1939 theater offering balcony seating.

For live music throughout the week, step into the Green Door Swing Dance Club or any number of hip cafes, bars, and restaurants. For a distinctive historical and cultural experience, Carlisle is where it's at.

  • This is a nice commercial, but whoever put it together should know that the guy in that picture of James Wilson is *not* James Wilson! James Wilson was a hugely important American -- the man who literally wrote the bulk of the Constitution. But looked nothing like that -- he was a portly, glasses-wearing dude.
