Yes, if "economy" means running up debt. If, however, "economy" means a great industrial capacity, efficient allocation of resources and high employment, US is not as great as it was a hundred years ago.
And on "sustaining the free world": I think the free world will sustain itself. US is not free any more, in many ways the rest of the world has a lot more freedom. All the laws and regulations have killed your freedom.

Haha we dont say we want to stay a superpower for no reason, we learned our lessons from WW2 and the cold war and we dont want to live in a world with competing military powers again...so you are damn right we will sustain our ability as a sole superpower in the name of world peace.
