It's common knowledge that the suicide rate in Japan is far higher than in most countries around the world. For most commuters in Japan, having to wait for late trains due to people jumping in front of them is a simple fact of life. At this one JR (Japan railway) station, they have a screen that informs you why a train is delayed.

Once I saw it say, "train delayed due to seismic activity"...aka..."earthquake." Yesterday a train was delayed due to "Human Damage Accident"...aka...a jumper. I just thought it was a little freaky to see this.

  • I was on a train last week that someone jumped in front of... We were stopped for about 35mins, doors stayed closed. I didnt realise what was going on at first. It was when the fire brigade showed up I suspected. Then seeing a large pool of blood on the platform next to a big bag confirmed it. It felt strange how the train just kept going, like nothing had happened really.

  • eeeek...that's nasty! Lukily I've never seen that sort of thing so upclose and personal. I hope I never do.

  • Good name for a rock band. Maybe if they recognized the concept of mental illness and didn't blame it on evil spirits....

  • You're right....it is a good band name!

  • I think its terrible when people jump in front of trains. If I was going to kill myself, I wouldn't do it in a way that inconvenienced a bunch of other people. That is very inconsiderate imo.

  • I'm sure that's a joke many frustrated commuters say!

  • thats sad

  • yeah I from Germany too and Even if it might not be as common as it is in Japan, there are still a lot of people ending their live jumping in front of a train. Actually thats how I lost a friend myself. One night she jumped in front of a train from a bridge. Nobody knows why.

  • On German train stations they call it "Unfall mit Personenschaden", which roughly translates into "accident involving physical injury". Suicide by train is pretty common in Germany, about 20 incidents per week.

  • you must of waited hours..thats just weird..never heard of that before lol

i bet the people were angry

  • I've only seen the much more ambiguous "delay due to accident."

  • I have read about it in a book called "that's why Japanese people are annoying" from Christoph Neuman, a German journalist, who is living in Japan! He writes that this is really a common thing over there. Don't some people wonder why it is the way it is!?!?

  • wo, that much!?

  • wow, people still do that?!?! pretty sad to put others into that situation.
