A parent of two Deaf children with cochlear implants shares her view about the value of the bilingual approach, including participating in the Shared Reading Project. The mother also shares how she noticed a tremendous improvement in her daughter's academic skills when she has a teacher who is Deaf and is fluent in ASL. She advocates for the type of bilingual instruction that allowed her daughter to advance two grade levels ahead of the normal grade level for her age. Thank you, Theresa for sharing!

  • Your vlog was very good example to teach deaf children sign while they have CI. That is big great benefit to have bilingual. I, myself is deaf but not with CI. I would have against CI on children, but if hearing parent give the benefit to teach sign and learn to talk and know the sound would be great! It sound like u dont take away the deaf community for ur children which I was relived. Hope those hearing parent with CI read ur vlog!! U did an amazing job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! God bless you!!

  • Thank you very much for telling the whole truth about ASL that helps your kids. Merry Xmas to you.. :)

  • hey. where you learn that ASL? my mom wants to learn ASL

  • Oh my goodness, all hearing parents of Deaf children should see this video!!! Thank you so much for making it, and for making your point so eloquently. I am absolutely thrilled for your children and so delighted for your whole family. You are a role model, even if you don't intend to be (probably just want to be a good Mom). Anyway, best wishes to you and your family ... and YES. You did the right thing.

  • Theresa -- thank you! I love seeing your story on video, beautifully done and very compelling.

My 3YO, Li-Li, is learning both ASL & spoken English in a wonderful bilingual program designed for deaf kids using CIs and we try to use both languages at home, much like you describe, (unlike you, though, we're still toddler-level in ASL).

Seeing how capable you are of continuing your children's education fluently in both languages is very inspiring. Please post more videos! Li-Li's Mom
