If you like Medtner, I think Marc-André Hamelin's performances are the best. The complete piano sonatas are available on Hyperion played by him. I can't stop listening!

Wild is so great, of course I also like Hamelin, but Wild remains my favourite....

@MrFerguson12 You've hit the nail on the head. People need an 'image' of a performer they can associate with. Like the dreamy appearance of Clayderman, or Lang Lang's histrionics, to 'get' when there's an emotion he wants to convey (but fails at :p). So if you're not really interested in music (and most people aren't unfortunately), then the usual performer won't appeal to you because he/she's boring. (or not interesting enough to look at)

@JiRocket classical music isn't boring, but many classical pianists are.

I don't think fingerwork for the right hand is insane.

i love this piece

I'm 17 in the U.S. I can explain. Most youth here are exposed to sexual images via television, the internet. The interest coming from these images overcome their want to embrace classical music. When fed classical music, they think plain and boring; they probably hear a simple piece that of Bach and immediately identify that with all other composers (a huge mistake I know). But the youth is more lustful so they would prefer music associated with partying. sum ppl jst dont kno about it.

RIP Earl

Whoa this is an old comment...but I'll comment anyways:
Accessible? Dang. I'm playing Liszt Transcendental Etude 10 right now, and I have to say that piece is a joke compared to this or something. The fingerwork for the right hand is just completely insane.

Yes, the performance is short - just before the sound cuts out Wild takes a wrong turning and I suspect that the sound conveniently returns once he is safely back on track. However, I agree that the portionss we do hear are very finely managed. Memory is fallible even at the highest level!

hamlin's liszt rhapsody #2 is the best interpretation I've ever heard
Cut it out, please, both of you. Anyone have anything to say about the music?
