An Introduction to Okinawan Kyusho and Kiko (沖縄の急所と気功入門) © 1994 Ryan Parker

This tape covers the basic theories for bunkai using the basic techniques (kihon-waza) found in the Classical (Seito) Kata as examples. It also covers how these theories relate to the form of vital point fighting called kyusho-jutsu or chibudi [tsubo-te]. These are the so-called "hidden techniques" (kakushi-te AKA himitsu waza) of the Ryukyu martial-arts.

It also covers some very basic Okinawan kiko (qi-gong). These kiko methods are the ki exercises of the Ryukyu martial-arts. These are similar to the Iron-Shirt and Golden-Bell Cover methods of Qi-Gong in terms of both practices and effects.

Information about my background can be found here:

then in the last part of the video when you receive all those punches...you are really good trained indeed, no matter chi kung...

but in other hand let me thinking are the geris and tsukis that we are doing really effective?? to perform to a trained guy like you or in other situations to big guys?

thank you very much and lot of respect from here

  • @TheReverb1

Thanks for the kind words. Regarding your question about punches and kicks not working on big guys, I'll just say that you should try find a big guy who is willing to just stand there and let you kick him in the testicles and punch him in the trachea. See what happens. I'll bet you can't find anyone willing to do that for the simple reason that it is incredibly dangerous. If you find somebody, I bet they go down on the first punch or kick, and certainly by the second.

  • ...very good video without BS, may be you can do something with the audio, that at least for me is too low.

Regarding mae geri attack then block with other geri and in diagonal to the opponent leg; well very good but in my opinion (not only in practice but watching hundreds of kumites live and on video plus other martial arts) is extremely difficult to perform that in a kumite situation, may be is a bit easier in the street if the guy do not know how to fight, but still almost impossible

  • @TheReverb1

It seems odd that the mae-geri bunkai appears impractical to you. I've used it literally hundreds of times in free-sparring (successfully). In free-fighting I tend to use a shin-on-shin block rather than a knee-on-shin block (mainly for safety but also because it is easier, but otherwise it is the same as the video. It is definitely not impossible in free sparring. In fact, it is my experience that it is actually -easy- to use in kumite

  • Thank you.. This video blew my mind.. Finally i am beginning to see what karate was supposed to be.. And how it has changed.. It needs to go back to its roots if it is to survive. Thanks again from a shotokan karateka

  • Thanks for opening my eyes..you have done many karateka a great service

  • @MrGetsumeinomichi

The video was meant to cover the kihon techniques of seito kata. Age uke is quite rare in seito kata and therefore isn't really kihon.

I have a video of Age uke bunkai in my uploads.

Soto uke isn't in any of the seito kata (that I know of) from the suidi traditions. it seems to be a modern invention. That said, it shouldn't be hard to apply the principles illustrated in this video to that motion and come up with something useable.

  • Do you know any bunkai for age uke? And soto uke? This video has really improved my karate and understanding.
