i use sony vegas... to edit all my videos for 3 years..it does HD...and is simple to use..

If your camera output is a quicktime format like mp4, use the free programs AnyVideoConverter or DVDVideoSoft studio to convert them to mpeg2 or wmv9 first. Then you should be able to edit.

I have to say that Adobe Premier works well, I use it to edit frapsed game movies and add text, effects and a lot more. It takes a while to get used to using it but it is quite powerful and will handle HD movies easily. The downside is that it costs 100 US bucks for the full package.

I had the exact same problem. I had to upgrade my processor. Hopefully that won't be the case for you. I'd just try some of the programs people mentioned, and hope for the best!
